CHAPTER 11
Jaxon
Sheâs texting me already. The woman barely left my office two hours ago and sheâs already texting me. I have a bad feeling that taking this job is going to be more work than I even expected. With a sigh, I close my computer and grab my stuff.
âYou heading out already, boss?â Dave asks as I step out of my office. He checks his watch again as if sure heâs reading the time wrong.
âI am, but Iâm not going home. I have to escort our newest client somewhere, shopping probably.â I grumble as I shrug into my coat. Shopping is one of my least favorite things to do. In my book, it ranks right up there with root canals and watching paint dry.
He flashes a sympathetic smile. âHey, at least itâs a job.â
âThat is true and maybe it will be enough to keep the doors open a little longer.â I hate that Iâm letting Dave down as well. If it were just me, it wouldnât be so bad. Iâm sure I could find another job and I know Dave can too, but I still feel responsible for him.
âHey, weâll figure it out. You just keep our client safe.â
I nod and exit the office, wishing I had Daveâs optimism.
The chill hits me before the first snowflake, and I sigh in agitation. Iâm not a fan of the cold or the snow. We donât get enough of it for people to know how to drive in it, so it just tends to make the roads more dangerous. It will also probably delay my arrival which wonât go over well with Belle.
Though Iâm not worried about someone following me, I still scan the area as I walk to my car as well as the mirrors as I drive to Belleâs house. Old habits die hard, I guess. Nothing appears out of the ordinary on the journey, but I take a second to scout out her parking lot just in case. When Iâm sure that no one is lying in wait to attack her, I park and open my door, but before I can even step out, my phone chirps again. âWhere are you?â the message reads. I roll my eyes, not bothering to respond as Iâm literally ten feet from her door. I expect her to be waiting inside, maybe even locked in a closet or hiding in the shower, so I am floored when I see her outside the door shivering.
âWhat took you so long?â she asks through chattering teeth.
âI came as soon as I got your message, and in case you hadnât noticed, itâs snowing outside and drivers around here donât do snow. Why arenât you inside where itâs warm?â
She chews on her bottom lip. âI left to help the neighbor - thatâs why I texted you - and I just have this feeling that it was a ruse and someone got in the apartment while I was gone. I was hoping you could check it out first.â
If only she were kidding, but the fear in her eyes makes it evident that she is not.
